Free Activities In DC:

  • Democracy Matters. This newly founded non-partisan organization is organizing free summer events for any and all interns in the DC area. They have specifically invited Everett Interns to participate in their scavenger hunt, happy hour, and weekly trivia contests. To learn more or sign up, visit www.democracymatters.org.
  • CNN’s Crossfire. Tickets to this popular CNN show on the George Washington campus are free. The show runs from 4:30 – 5pm on most weekdays. For tickets, call 202-994-8266.
  • Tour of NPR. NPR provides free tours to the public on Thursday mornings at 11am. No registration is necessary; first come, first served. For more information call, 202-513-2000.
  • The National Mall. No summer in DC is complete without a trip to the Mall and the Smithsonian museums. These national museums are free of charge, thanks to your tax dollar. For more info, go to www.smithsonian.org, or call 202-357-2700.
  • National Geographic’s Explorers Hall Museum. This museum is open everyday except Christmas. Located at 1145 17th Street NW (at 17th and M Street NW; Farragut North metro stop). Call 202-857-7588 for more information; admission is free to the public.
  • Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Every summer, the Smithsonian hosts a cultural festival to celebrate three different locations. For 2003 they've picked Mali, Scotland, and the Applachians. For information visit www.folklife.si.edu/CFCH/festival2003.htm.
  • Free performances at the Kennedy Center everyday at 6pm. This is very special opportunity to visit the Kennedy Center. To view the schedule, go to their website: www.kennedy-center.org/programs/millennium/schedule.html.
  • The City Paper. This is a weekly newspaper that highlights current arts and entertainment in DC. It is distributed on Thursdays to numerous locations throughout town (and it’s even free). Online, go to www.washingtoncitypaper.com.
  • Screen on the Green. This is a seasonal series of free outdoor films on the National Mall. For details, visit www.digitalcity.com/washington/screenonthegreen/.
